Best Caffeine Free Nootropics

Nootropics, often called smart drugs, are natural molecules that can enhance memory, focus and concentration. When used correctly, nootropics can greatly enhance your life by improving mood and helping you get more done.

Using nootropic supplements is a great alternative to stimulants like caffeine and adderall, which can offer short-term benefits but lead to unwanted side effects like crashing and tolerance building. However, you don’t want to leap blindly into the world of brain boosters without first understanding the best way to use nootropics to improve memory, focus and mental clarity.

So...before you jump head-first into the world of nootropic supplements, let’s look at what makes a high quality nootropic supplement and highlight the best caffeine-free nootropics available today!

Ingredients to Look For in a Caffeine-Free Nootropic

The most important thing to look for in a nootropic supplement is of course - the ingredients.

There are all sorts of molecules that marketers will tell you can improve mental clarity or mental processing. But if you want to be a smart consumer, you’ll want to look for ingredients that have been clinically researched and are also highly regarded by long-term users.

You could spend countless hours researching the best nootropic stacks to clear brain fog and boost performance, can keep reading below. The following are all highly regarded and clinically researched ingredients that you should look for in a quality nootropic formula.

I’ve written about l-theanine before, and for good reason! L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in green tea leaves, and it’s an amazing addition to any nootropic stack.

Studies have shown that l-theanine can reduce stress and improve cognitive function by acting as an agonist to GABA receptors. If that last part was confusing at all, don’t worry. Let me explain…

l theanine

GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in your brain. To put it in an incredibly oversimplified way, GABA signaling is responsible for reducing neuronal excitement in your brain. L-theanine acts as a partial agonist to GABA receptors, and thus can promote calm and relaxation without promoting sleepiness!

L-theanine also increases serotonin and dopamine production in the brain, and enhances relaxation through modulating alpha brain wave activity! In other words, do not use a caffeine-free nootropic blend if it doesn’t have l-theanine.

L-tyrosine is another amino acid that makes for a powerful addition to any nootropic formula. It’s a precursor in the production of catecholamines like dopamine and noradrenaline - two neurotransmitters with a wide range of downstream effects on brain cells. And through this mechanism of action, l-tyrosine has demonstrated an ability to alleviate the effects of stress in the brain!

L-tyrosine has been studied extensively for its effects on mitigating the effects of stress. And because l-tyrosine has demonstrated success in a range of clinical studies, we recommend adding l-tyrosine to your caffeine-free nootropic stack!

Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa monnieri, also known in ayurveda as brahmi, is a plant extract used by ayurvedic practitioners for centuries to reduce brain fog, improve memory, ease anxiety and more!

bacopa monnieri

Studies on bacopa monnieri and cognitive performance indicate that the herbal extract can enhance focus, memory and recall when ingested prior to cognitive activity. This is why we recommend bacopa monnieri as a must-have addition to any nootropic formula.

Various mechanisms of action have been proposed for bacopa monnieri, and at this point, the most likely mechanisms are the increase of cerebral blood flow, inhibition of acetylcholinesterase enzyme, and various effects of neuromodulation and brain cell neuroprotection.

If that sounds confusing...don’t worry. Just know this: bacopa monnieri helps enhance memory, focus, and concentration - making it an excellent addition to any formula claiming to be the best caffeine-free nootropic stack.

Vitamin B12

Finally, an ingredient you’ve likely heard of before! While the term “vitamin” gets thrown around a lot, few people actually know what it means. So let’s change that, one reader at a time :)

Vitamins are complex molecules that are essential to optimal human function. They are mostly used as cofactors in enzymatic reactions. And thus, vitamins are depleted in daily functioning and must be replenished - often through diet.

Vitamin b12 is essential to processes like the creation of DNA and RNA, red blood cell formation, the creation of myelin sheath which protects neurons, and most importantly for this article - the creation of neurotransmitters! if you’re using a caffeine-free nootropic stack to boost cognitive performance, then you’ll need sufficient b12 to support the production of these neurotransmitters.

vitamin b12

If you’re eating a diet that’s high in vitamin b12, then you don’t particularly need extra vitamin b12 in the form of a supplement. However, if your diet is at all sufficient in vitamin b12, then it’s imperative that you include this ingredient in your caffeine-free nootropic formula.

Vitamin B6

Another vitamin that’s critical to the creation of neurotransmitters is vitamin b6. In fact, vitamin b6 is required to synthesize key neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and GABA. Vitamin b6 is essential to optimal brain health and has been shown to play an important role in regulating mood as well as cognitive function.

Your body cannot create vitamin b6 on its own, so you need to get this from diet or supplementation. And here’s something to specifically keep in mind if you’re using nootropic brain boosters - you’ll be increasing the amount of certain neurotransmitters, and thus you’ll need to increase your vitamin b6 uptake to replenish these neurotransmitters. That’s why we recommend a caffeine-free brain booster that has some added vitamin b6 content!

Alpha GPC

Alpha GPC, or Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine, is another ingredient commonly found in nootropic formulas. And that makes sense, because alpha gpc has been shown to improve mood, focus and cognitive performance.

Alpha GPC supplementation supplies a bioavailable form of choline to the brain. Choline is a key component used to synthesize acetylcholine, the most abundant neurotransmitter found in the nervous system!

alpha gpc

If you’re looking for an effective caffeine-free brain booster, we recommend a product that contains alpha gpc or that you add alpha gpc to your homemade nootropic stack!

Huperzine A

Huperzine A is a plant extract that’s been of particular interest as of late for the prevention of dementia and Alzheimer’s. And while these applications are certainly interesting, I recommend huperzine a for people of all ages looking to kill brain fog and increase memory focus and concentration!

Huperzine a is derived from Chinese club moss and works by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase enzyme - which allows acetylcholine to remain active for longer. As you know from reading above, acetylcholine is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain and responsible for most parasympathetic nervous system signaling. In brief, huperzine is a must-have molecule for any supplement claiming to be the best caffeine-free nootropic.

Ingredients to Consider for a Caffeine-Free Nootropic

Now that we’ve covered the “must-have” ingredients for a caffeine-free nootropic stack, let’s discuss some ingredients that may add value but are not necessary for an optimal stack. These are ingredients that you may wish to supplement with a few times to see how they affect you - with the understanding that their effectiveness varies depending on the purpose.

I personally do not use any of the ingredients below, but I do know people who claim to receive important benefits from these ingredients. And for that reason, I feel a responsibility to include them in this article.

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola is plant extract found in Europe and Asia. It’s considered an adaptogen - a fancy term that means it can help your body adapt to stress.

rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola works by preventing the degradation of certain monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. This allows these neurotransmitters to stick around in the brain for longer - exerting more effect than without ingesting rhodiola.

I personally don’t like the effects of rhodiola, but I do acknowledge that there are some promising studies and others do claim to enjoy daily use of this adaptogenic plant. And for that reason, I propose that you consider rhodiola for your caffeine-free nootropic stack.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is a tree native to China that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It’s an ancient plant with a wide range of claimed benefits and a solid amount of research studies focused on its effects.

Ginkgo is most often used as a memory and cognition supplement and has a number of active compounds. In addition to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds, it is thought that ginkgo biloba contains molecules that can improve neurotransmitter receptor activity and enhance the metabolism of certain brain cells.

As with rhodiola rosea, I do not use ginkgo biloba as a daily component of my caffeine free nootropic stack - but I do know people who vouch for its benefits. If you’re interested in adding gingko biloba to your nootropic formula, it’s worth evaluating for yourself.
